AP Reports That McCain Campaign Has Cut Staff, in Wake of 1st Qtr Fundraising $$$
On Wednesday, April 11, the AP reported that substantial staff and consultant cuts had been made by the official campaign. The report did name one specific casualty, consultant Chris Drummond of South Carolina, who told the AP that “it kind of came as a surprise.”
There were some substantive figures in the AP article. It reported that the Arlington, VA-based campaign has about 120 employees overall(although not all are specifically political), both in Arlington and in early primary/caucus states such as Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina. The campaign was not specific as to exactly how many spots were being cut.
The article reported that none of the political OR communications OR spots in early primary states were being cut, which would seem to indicate that other areas of the campaign were hit fairly hard by the reductions.
At the same time, it appears that some staff intended to be added in May won’t be, and that “some consultants will be paid on a per-project basis”.
All of this appears to be the continued fallout, from the disappointing fundraising numbers released last week, in which Senator McCain’s $12.5 million trailed rivals Mitt Romney and Rudy Giuliani. Moreover, the “burn rate” of McCain’s campaign cash has apparently alarmed those in Arlington’s high command - hence the cuts.
