Jonathan Martin’s Blog on The Politico on Republicans ‘08 - Romney in Iowa, McCain’s Fired SC Staff, Giuliani’s Loss of Internet Guru

The Tower now takes a look at one of the most popular political new-media sites and what it is saying today, June 1, the date of The Tower’s official launch.  It will begin with The Politico’s Jonathan Martin, who is covering the Republican side in 2008.  Martin’s several posts dated June 1, have boatloads of interesting info, regarding all three of the major Republican contenders.  (Yes, we know Fred Thompson is about to dive in, but until he does, The Tower can’t count him as a candidate.)   In chronological order of posting:

  • Martin spent most of yesterday (Thursday, May 31) traveling with Mitt Romney through Iowa, in a post titled Romney’s Iowa Trek.  Martin describes the post as “my look at some of the former governor’s considerable strengths and significant weaknesses on the stump.”

  • The shots at Romney from McCain’s camp on immigration continue.  In McCain Goes Full Frontal on Mitt on Immigration, Martin writes that “Usually campaigns will send around “In Case You Missed It” emails or “What They’re Saying About…” emails to flag favorable stories and drive home a positive message.  Not so this morning with the McCain camp.”

  • Martin continues in McCain’s fired Christian conservatives… with coverage of the recent staff departures from the McCain campaign in SC, which we will discuss in more detail over on Exploring McCainia.
  • As also discussed in Exploring McCainia last evening, Martin reports the results of the Winthrop U./ETV poll showing a statistical tie between Giuliani and McCain in South Carolina, in New SC poll has Rudy up, many undecided.  Romney remains in a statistical tie with McCain for second place.
  • Finally, in Giuliani loses Internet guru, Martin discusses the fact that “Patrick Ruffini, who ran the Internet operation for President Bush’s reelection between stints boosting Web efforts at the RNC, has left Rudy Giuliani’s campaign.  He had been advising the former mayor on Internet strategies.  In an e-mail, Ruffini said the decision to cut ties with the former mayor was his own and ‘was done amicably.’ ”
