Politico’s Jonathan Martin: McCain e-campaign using aircraft carrier to raise $$$; campaign claims that about $2.64 million has been raised so far - the goal is $3 million
As a follow-up to the previous post, The Politico’s Jonathan Martin notes in a roundup of the use of the aircraft carrier for the e-campaign’s $3 million goal:
Just one line: “McCain is now using an aircraft carrier to raise online money”
The Tower’s take on the aircraft carrier:
The aircraft carrier measurement device shows that the campaign claims to be about 88% of the way there, with about two and a half weeks left in June. Granted, there is no way of independently determining whether that’s the case, and the goal itself is arbitrary (it could just as easily be $2 million, or $4 million). It seems clear that the campaign would be unlikely to declare publicly a goal which it didn’t think it could reach.
Per the symbolism - the aircraft carrier - nowadays, the most recognizable symbol of U.S. naval power, carrying long-range aircraft that can strike anywhere in the world thanks to the carrier’s freedom to roam international waters at will - is a great metaphor for a campaign. It would be a great metaphor, even if the candidate hadn’t been in naval aviation for many years.
Fundraising is a bit dry, after all, and it’s good to provide donors with the impression that the McCain campaign is the political equivalent of a magnificent aircraft carrier, rather than simply trying to raise money, without the use of props or compelling visual images.
So we’ll see how much more is added to the total, and when.
