McCain arrives in SW Florida (Fort Myers/Lee County) to raise $$$ and in anticipation of the new early Fla. primary

On Tuesday, June 19, Senator McCain appeared in heavily Republican Lee County in Florida, but not just in order to raise some cash.  With Florida having advanced its primary to January, it has become a major player in the nomination process as well.  According to the News-Press of Southwest Florida:

Sen. John McCain’s brief stop in Fort Myers on Tuesday is a sign of more presidential candidate visits to come, party leaders say.McCain was the first of the announced Republican presidential candidates to stop in Southwest Florida. He made his bid to fellow party members through a press conference at PrivateSky Aviation. He then met privately with local business leaders in Bonita Springs to plan his local financial strategy, said Gary Lee, chairman of the Republican Party of Lee County…

The presidential primary season has accelerated with states moving primaries to earlier dates. Gov. Charlie Crist signed a bill moving up the Florida primary from early March to Jan. 29, making it the first large-state primary in the nation.

McCain said his purpose in Fort Myers was to garner more support and to add to his campaign’s coffers. McCain is running second to former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani in the Washington Post/ABC News poll, 32 percent to 19 percent.

“The concentration now is money. I can’t emphasize that enough,” Lee said.

Southwest Florida, with its overwhelming Republican majority — 45 percent of all voters in Lee County are registered Republicans — and wealthy retirees is a magnet for fundraising.”
