Des Moines Register reports reaction of focus group to McCain in Sunday’s ABC-sponsored debate

The Des Moines Register reported the reactions of a focus group of Iowans to Senator McCain’s appearance in Sunday’s ABC-sponsored debate.  Here are key excerpts:

Sen. John McCain of Arizona gained the most in Sunday’s debate in terms of voters being comfortable with him as a president, while former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee registered some of the highest marks of agreement for statements he made about Iraq, according to a test group of Des Moines-area residents…

Before the testing began, Thau asked participants to rate on a scale of up to 10 how comfortable they were with each candidate. McCain picked up the most points, jumping from a cumulative score of 4.3 to 6.6. Participants said after watching the debate that they believed his experience, coupled with his positive attitude toward winning the war in Iraq, boosted him. A few acknowledged that, before the debate, they begrudged him for his decision to skip the upcoming Ames straw poll, which is set for Saturday…
