Detroit Free Press: About 150 attend McCain pork roast in Michigan
The Detroit Free Press adds the detail that he addressed “about 150 people” at the Oakland County, Michigan event. Given that some paid $50 for general admission while others paid $250 for a private reception, it is impossible to estimate with much accuracy how much was brought in by this event.
The campaign made use of a particularly striking firsthand prop, showing that Senator McCain’s oft-repeated determination to cut pork, was not entirely metaphorical:
He used the fund-raiser, which featured a roast pig complete with apple stuffed mouth to tell the audience that he’ll fight against the pork barrel politics of Washington.“When I’m president of the United States, I will veto the first pork barrel project that crosses my desk,” he said.McCain counts Michigan as one of his success stories. In 2000, he won the state’s Republican primary over George W. Bush, despite strong backing of Bush by then Gov. John Engler.
McCain also has had fund-raising success in Michigan, raising more than $750,000 in Michigan during the first half of the year, second only to former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, a Michigan native and son of former Michigan Gov. George Romney.
“The important thing about Michigan is you have to be visible, so I’ve been coming back here for a long time,” he said.
