In an interview with The State newspaper, U.S. Sen. John McCain touched on a wide swath of topics:
McCain said:
• He does not support a military draft.
• The surge in Iraq is working.
• The president should have asked Americans to serve their country after 9/11. “Instead, we told them to go shopping or go on a trip.”
• Donald Rumsfeld will go down in history as one of the worst defense secretaries in the nation’s history.
• The American people have been “remarkably patient” as the Bush administration exaggerated the progress in Iraq.
• If elected, he would hold a news conference every two weeks and go on television every week to explain what happened in Iraq and Afghanistan.
• He would work to secure the nation’s borders before moving on a guest-worker program for illegal immigrants.
