NYTimes’s The Caucus: “McCain faces the heat in Iowa” - the heat index was over 105

More on Senator McCain’s visit to Iowa on Tuesday: the New York Times‘ The Caucus published a concise report of his trip to the State Fair at Ames, the site of Saturday’s straw poll, in which McCain did not compete.  The report also notes that the heat in Iowa was scorching - hence the headline.  Here are key excerpts:

…Mr. McCain, in his appearance here, made clear that he intended to compete in Iowa.

“This is going to be an important part of the nominating process,” he said. “The people of Iowa understand their responsibilities. We look forward to taking part in the caucuses and I hope everybody no matter what party they are will turn out to vote since that will be one of the key elements in the selection of the next president.”…

As one [aide] announced that she intended to bring the car closer to Mr. McCain, he deadpanned: “Send an ambulance for me.” He was kidding. But the heat index was upwards of 105.
