Nizer is an articulate blogger, who stated that his reasons for supporting Senator McCain are “his personal biography, policy positions, and his demonstrated ability to transcend partisan politics.”
Nizer said that his motivation for publishing McCain 2008 was “because I wasn’t content to simply be on the sidelines. In 2004, I was largely a passive observer.”
Nizer, a registered Republican, said that his interest in politics emerged from McCain’s 2000 presidential bid, during which he became a McCain supporter. This highlights one key advantage, which McCain holds over the rest of the Republican field: he is the only candidate to have previously sought the nomination. As a result, McCain is the only one to have a national political organization. Much of that organization consists of loyalists such as Nizer, from his 2000 bid, who have waited patiently for McCain’s turn to come around.
Nizer said that his biggest surprise, from publishing McCain 2008, “has been the intensity of Romney supporters. I once posted a criticism of the Governor, and received half a dozen angry replies. At that point in the development of the blog, I was maybe getting one comment a post.” Mitt Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, is widely considered to be one of the chief rivals for the GOP nomination.
When asked if he had sought a certain demographic group to influence, via his blog, Nizer said that “I try to reach all Republicans, although I have a special focus on fellow Northeastern moderates.”
In a similar spirit, Nizer cited another reason for his endorsement of the Senator: “McCain is the only major Republican candidate with any real desire to combat global warming.”
Campaignia attempts to place its subjects in context, and look at some non-political interests they may have. Nizer lists, on his Blogger profile, that his favorite genre of music is jazz, and that his favorite books are the pair of ancient classical works, the Aeneid and the Odyssey.
